Kids Get to Taste Difference of Farm-fresh Carrots

Photo: Meredith Schimmens and Natalie Rocheleau of Radical Gardens have been busy picking and cleaning more than 1,000 pounds of carrots that will be delivered to local schools this week. As part of the Red Cross local Big Crunch event, students across the region will be given the locally grown vegetable as a means to improve learning about nutrition and healthy snacking.

A synchronized crunch will be heard in Timmins on Wednesday as students bite into fresh carrots provided to them as part of the Canadian Red Cross Big Crunch event.

The organization has teamed up with farm-to-table market Radical Gardens to provide schools across the region with locally grown carrots that students will be able to enjoy at the special event on Oct. 7.

Radical Gardens harvested 1,135 pounds of carrots to support the event and all of the schools in the region that participate in the Red Cross student nutrition program will be provided with a portion of them today and tomorrow.

After they’re picked, the carrots go through an extensive process where they’re washed and scrubbed several times before being shipped off to the schools. Read More…
