On Thursday, September 22nd, 2016, educators, health professionals, farmers and other leaders gathered in St John’s, NL for a historic event – the first ever provincial school food gathering.
“The conversation was lively as participants were lead through mapping exercises and round table dialogue to illuminate current school food initiatives happening in NL and to explore of future collaboration to enhance the school food environment for children of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL).
Over the next few weeks, Food First NL and Kids Eat Smart Foundation NL will be working together to publish a proceedings document.” Key themes and recommendations coming out of the gathering will be synthesized and summarized in a report that will be co-submitted to the provincial government’s Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development upon completion.
“While the report is still in development, we understand “healthy” “local” and “sustainable” food in curriculum and in the cafeteria rang through the dialogue all day long”. Joanne Bays, National Manager Farm to cafeteria Canada.
