I would like to take a moment and let you all know of a significant development within our culinary team here at UBC.
Late last week Chef Steve Golob informed us of his retirement. While we are sad to see Steve leave UBC and move on to the next chapter of his life we are proud of what Steve was able to achieve here in his almost 21 years of service to the University. Chef Steve has been a dedicated and valuable member of the culinary team and his legacy will be forever remembered. It was Steve who was the early champion of local food on campus and an early supporter of the UBC Farm. In his 40 plus years as a professional chef Steve has worked hard to promote healthy eating habits specifically in school settings. His work with Farm To School Canada, Sprouting Chefs and Think & Eat Green @ School are just a few examples of Steve’s leadership and desire to support healthy food systems within the education system. In 2013 Steve was the recipient of the prestigious UBC President’s Award in Global Citizenship. This award recognized Steve’s personal achievement and his contributions to the vision and goals of the University.
Steve’s work here at the UBC stands in a class of it’s own but it is Steve’s infectious smile and warm personality that we will miss most. Steve will be with us until the middle of June. In the true spirit of his care of others he has provided us with ample notice and is retiring at the best time operationally for us so that we can continue residence dining with as little disruption as possible. Place Vanier will not be quite the same ever again. Steve is a true professional. Please find some time to say goodbye to Steve over the next few months. Feel free to share this email with others that had the pleasure of working with Steve.
We wish Steve all the best and on behalf of the UBC Food Services leadership team I would like to thank him for all that he has done for us here within UBC Food Services. Thank you Steve!
David Speight, Executive Chef, UBC
