The Public Health Agency of Canada has just launched the Canada’s food guide toolkit for educators.
The toolkit is intended for use by health and education intermediaries that work with children aged 4 to 11, to help them explore foods, learn food skills, develop healthy eating habits, and understand Canada’s food guide.
The toolkit includes a number of different sections:
- How to create a supportive environment to enjoy food together or discuss and explore food and eating. This includes sections on supporting pleasant food experiences, leading by example, addressing highly processed foods and promoting acceptance of different body shapes and sizes.
- Children’s and adults’ roles around food and eating, referring to the Satter Division of Responsibility in Feeding, as well as factors that influence eating patterns and food selection.
- Considering and educating children on culture and food traditions.
- Recognizing and evaluating your biases.
- Food safety considerations.
The toolkit also shares activities for children ages 4-6, ages 7 and 8, and ages 9 to 11 to support children in experiencing and exploring foods that are part of Canada’s food guide.
