Inglewood School, Grand Bay-Westfield, NB
Grant term 2022-2024
Inglewood School is a small suburban school servicing 115 grades 3-5 students. It is situated in picturesque Grand Bay-Westfield, New Brunswick along the magnificent Saint John River. This tightly-knit school values families and prioritizes students’ well-being.
Families commute to nearby Saint John for work and activities. Students at Inglewood are involved in many activities including sports, drama and music. Students enjoy being involved and busy.
The Farm to School Grant has made it possible for Inglewood to have a free salad bar. Students bring a fork and bowl from home and enjoy making their own salads. Grade 5 students prepare the items and help serve. This past June there were 47 items in the salad bar and over 100 students were served daily.
The remarks from students, “I didn’t even know I liked salad” and “I asked mom if we could have more salads at home” are proof that students are and will be eating healthier. Comments from parents ranged from “what a great idea” to “I could never get my kids to eat salad before” and “ I now have to buy lettuce” confirm that the eating habits are not only changing at school but are carrying over to home as well.
As the kids were leaving for their summer vacation one remarked, “we have to have the salad bar next year”. We look forward to serving healthy food for many years to come.
