Exploring the Role of Seafood in Canadian School Food Programs

Webinar hosted by Local Catch Canada

With Canada’s National School Food Policy highlighting the urgency of strengthening food security nationwide, a new question arises: should seafood be on the menu?

In August, Local Catch Canada hosted a thought-provoking webinar titled “Seafood in Schools,” inviting educators and food advocates to explore the potential of adding locally-sourced fish and seafood to school meal programs. The webinar discussion emphasized how integrating seafood into school lunches can promote healthier eating habits, expand students’ palates, and deepen their understanding of sustainable food sources.

This insightful session featured passionate speakers from across Canada, including Brent Mansfield (Lunch Lab), Kimberly Orren (Fishing for Success), Matthew Kemshaw (Flourish Food Society), and Becky Winsor (Holy Heart of Mary). Each speaker shared their unique perspective on how seafood could enhance not only students’ nutritional intake but also support local fisheries and sustainable food systems.
