Simon Jacob Memorial Education Centre, Webequie, ON
Grant term 2022-2024
The Simon Jacob Memorial Education Centre in rural Webequie, Ontario, Canada, is home to 250 students from kindergarten to grade 12. Our school has been running the Farm to Cafeteria Canada (F2CC) program for the past two years, and it has had a significant impact on our students and community.
The key feature of our program is our hydroponic tower garden, which was made possible through a grant from F2CC. This garden has allowed our students to learn about sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and food security in a hands-on way. They have been able to grow fresh produce right in their school, which has been incorporated into our cafeteria meals, providing students with healthy and locally sourced food options.
Our community member and champion of the grant, Principal Mary Gardener, has been instrumental in the success of our program. She has dedicated countless hours to ensuring the garden is thriving and that our students are engaged in learning about food production. Her passion and dedication have been truly inspiring to everyone involved.
One of our teachers, Mr. Jordan, shared, “The F2CC grant has transformed our school in so many ways. Our students now have a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and the importance of eating fresh, healthy foods. It has been amazing to see the impact this program has had on our school community.”
Overall, the F2CC program at Simon Jacob Memorial Education Centre has not only provided our students with valuable knowledge and skills but has also strengthened our community’s connection to food and sustainability. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program and look forward to continuing to grow and learn together.
