“When you are wanting something to grow, you need to start with the children.” – Learning Circle Participant
In 2019 F2CC, in partnership with the Social Planning & Research Council of BC, provided a Local Food to School Learning Circle Grant to Q’wemtsín Health Society (QHS) to support Sk’elep School of Excellence, from Tk’emlups te Secwépemc, and Skeetchestn Community School to hold learning circles in their communities. The circles set out to increase the amount of food in the schools that is local, and healthy while being reflective of Indigenous cultural practices.
These efforts grew into an ever-growing vision for a community food system that encompasses school health, education, food security, social development, economic development and more.
A number of initiatives have been ignited by these conversations. As quoted by Bobbi Saskamoose, Learning Circle Coordinator, “Each community now has their own community food sovereignty team; they have employees specifically dedicated to that work.”
