Background:
This is the first session of a new Farm to School webinar series hosted by Nourishing School Communities in partnership with Farm to Cafeteria Canada the lead national organization championing farm to school programs and New Brunswick Food Security Action Network and the Food Security Network of Newfoundland and Labrador, the lead provincial organizations championing Farm to School programs. The Nourishing School Communities Initiative is a collaborative, evidence-based initiative that aims to get healthy and local foods into the minds, onto the plates, and into the tummies of school children across Canada. We are engaging many partners in this process – from school children, parents, teachers, principals, school meal providers, farmers, after-school providers, First Nations communities, researchers and policy makers. Together we are supporting important changes to school food environments, changes that aim to shift policies and practices in a way that makes access to healthy local foods easier and fun. Nourishing School Communities initiative steering committee members include: the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Farm to Cafeteria Canada, YMCA Canada, Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations, Lunch Lady, University of New Brunswick and Propel Centre for Population Health Impact.
