School Description

Whitewood School is a community pre-K to 12 school with a population of 260 students. We do offer a daily free breakfast program for all our students with support from various organizations. We do have a significant number of students from low-income families attending our school. The goals for this breakfast program is to; • reduce food insecurity, • improve our students dietary daily intake, • positively impact health rates among our students, • help meet some of the students’ nutritional needs in order to foster a better learning environment. Our free breakfast program offers a variety of choices such as toast, cheese, muffins, cereal, eggs, fruit and milk. On an average, the program feeds about 50 students daily Monday to Friday. The program is for any student who wants to have breakfast. We also have lunch vouchers for students who do not bring lunch to school. In a week we provide about 25 students with lunch vouchers. The vouchers are used at the school canteen where the students get healthy and nutritious meals. In some cases, the meals eaten at school are the most nutritious meals these students get to eat and/or might be the only meal they eat in a day. In addition, once a month, we serve free healthy snacks to all students. We recently started growing our own food using hydroponic towers and a community garden. The students like the experience so far. They have learned to plant, harvest, preserve and cook their produce.
