School Description
William Gillett Academy is located in a small rural community of Charlottetown on the South east coast of Labrador. The school has students from Charlottetown and the community of Pinsents' Arm (which is 24 km outside of Charlottetown). We currently serve a breakfast program (Kids Eat Smart Breakfast Program). Our students participate in this program which is run by volunteers and school staff. Students are also participating the Succeed program growing vegetables in the school, in hydroponic kits. The students harvest the vegetables and made their own salads, learning how to grow, harvest and prepare healthy meals. Our school has recently expanded on growing vegetables this year by receiving a provincial grant to build a school garden, which was very successful. The students planted and harvested the vegetables, as well as donating to the community seniors, helping to develop empathy. We are hoping that with further funds we can build more4 gardens and expand the variety, to bring more local and nutritious food into our school community!
